The Seattle Monorail is one of the best modern-day examples of a true public-private partnership — owned by the City of Seattle, and operated by Seattle Monorail Services (SMS), a private company, since 1994.
How does Seattle Monorail work?
The monorail takes approximately two minutes to travel between the Seattle Center and Westlake Center terminals, which are located 0.9 miles (1.4 km) apart. Trains depart from each terminal approximately every 10 minutes, with a single train running continuously.

Construction began in April of 1961 by Alweg Rapid Transit Systems, who received the bid when it offered to underwrite the entire cost of construction. The Monorail opened to the public on March 24, 1962 nearly one month before the start of the World’s Fair.
