State st. is a pretty safe area. If you want to stay in New Haven look at La Quinta. If you want nice suburbs try Comfort Inn in Guilford or Rodeway in Branford. If you want to spend $ Saybrook Point Inn in Old Saybrook or Waters Edge in Westbrook.
