The Tattoo show incorporates a short fireworks display, usually near the end of the show (weather permitting). An “enhanced” fireworks display takes place at the performances on Friday starting at around 9pm (9.30pm on Friday 26 August) and Saturday 9.30pm.
Can you visit Edinburgh Castle during the Tattoo?
The castle is closed on 25 and 26 December. The castle will close early on the following dates to accommodate the Tattoo and additional performances: 6, 13, 20, 26 and 27 August.

The Tattoo performance takes place every weekday evening and twice on Saturdays throughout August and has never been cancelled due to inclement weather. However, in 2020 and 2021 the performances were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is no cover at the arena, however no performance of the Tattoo has ever been cancelled. In the event of inclement weather, rapmacs are available for purchase from the souvenir kiosk on the Castle Esplanade. Umbrellas are not permitted.

We stretch back for almost seven decades. Following the production of ‘Something About a Soldier’ in the Ross Bandstand in 1949, it was decided to create an event which ran alongside the existing Edinburgh Festivals. The official Tattoo was duly created with its first performance in 1950.
Why is it called a military tattoo?
The name “military tattoo” dates back to the 17th century. It is from the phrase “doe den tap toe”, which translates into “turn off the tap”. The phrase refers to a signal made by trumpeters and drummers to announce to in-keepers by military garrisons to stop giving soldiers beers so they can return to the barracks.
